I actually quite liked the alien race, the Nevians. Physics, time, and politics never stand in the way of a plot that gallops ahead without letup. The golden glow of summer afternoons in the garden and dimly-lit late nights in bed I had a thing then for dozing off while reading by candlelight - luckily no fires!
This isn't done very successfully, especially in the first few where it all seems very tacked on. I loved it, and still do.

Smith sets up this stark contrast between good and evil triolanetary the first chapters as he sets up this universe's iconic mythos, as the kind, godlike Arisians work in secret to defeat the tyrannical, megalomaniacal Eddoreans. I don't even know what her job is.
So, instead of adding to audiiobook enjoyment of the story with sharp vocal characterisation, his narration confuses me as I try to work out whether the character he's vocalising is Virgil Samms, Granite jawed hero of the Universe, or Clio, perpetually demur love interest and air head.
I read this book some 35 years ago. The first few stories are alright taken as they are, an ancient Roman gladiator story, a war story, but not much SF to be found there.
